Applied Knowledge (ACCA Level 1) is the starting point of the ACCA qualification and is designed to build your strong foundation in accounting and business principles. It is suitable for beginners with no prior accounting background.

At this level, you are introduced to how businesses operate in the real world and how financial information is created and used for decision-making.

You will learn:

  • Basic business understanding – how organisations are structured, how they operate, and the role of finance in business
  • Introduction to accounting principles – how financial transactions are recorded and how basic financial statements are prepared
  • Basic cost and management accounting – understanding costs, budgeting, planning, and controlling business activities
  • Basic professional and ethical awareness – understanding how accountants should behave professionally in a business environment

The Applied Knowledge level consists of three papers:

  • Business and Technology (BT): Introduces how businesses function and the role of accounting and finance in organisations
  • Management Accounting (MA): Focuses on budgeting, costing, and providing financial information for internal decision-making
  • Financial Accounting (FA): Teaches how to prepare and understand basic financial statements such as income statements and balance sheets

This level is very important because it builds the foundation for all higher ACCA levels. Once completed, students progress to the Applied Skills level, where the topics become more detailed, technical, and professional.
