IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is the world’s leading English language proficiency examination for higher education and international migration. Each year, more than 2 million candidates take the test. IELTS is trusted by over 12,500 organisations globally as a fair, accurate, and reliable measure of real-life English communication skills for study, work, and immigration purposes. The test is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English Language Assessment.
The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international body for education and cultural engagement. Its mission is to foster mutual understanding and trust through education and cultural exchange, and it operates in more than 100 countries worldwide.
About the IELTS Test
IELTS assesses a candidate’s ability in four key language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Results are reported using a nine-band scoring system, where Band 1 represents the lowest level and Band 9 indicates expert proficiency.
There are two IELTS test formats designed to meet different needs.
IELTS Academic evaluates the level of English required for university study or professional registration in an academic environment. The content is suitable for all candidates, regardless of their chosen field of study.
IELTS General Training focuses on practical English used in everyday life, including workplace and social settings. This version is commonly required for migration to countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland and others.
IELTS Online has the same format as an IELTS Academic test taken at a test centre, but the Listening, Reading, and Writing components will be taken on your own computer or laptop. The Speaking component is also carried out online via video call with a trained IELTS Examiner.
